Frequently Asked QuestionsFreeze Drying (Lyophilization) is accomplished by sublimation of ice in a vacuum. The basic elements of this process have been known for over 70 years. However, it was not until World War II that much emphasis was placed on the refinement of the process. During this time a lot of attention was given to the development of equipment and techniques for the purpose of supplying large quantities of dried blood plasma and penicillin to the armed forces. By the end of the war, freeze-drying had become known as a near-perfect method of preservation. What is freeze-drying?The basic principle of freeze-drying is the removal of water from a specimen as water vapor by means of a vacuum, and collection of this water vapor in a condenser. With the specimen solidly frozen during the process, shrinkage is eliminated or minimized, and near perfect preservation will result. What kind of equipment is required to freeze dry?Freeze-drying requires the use of a special machine called a freeze-dryer. The freeze-dryer has a large chamber for freezing and a vacuum pump for removing moisture. How long do freeze dried flowers last?Since the freeze-drying of botanicals began in 1989, it is still too early to say that freeze-dried flowers will last forever. However, when protected from humidity, sunlight, and insects, freeze-dried botanicals can last for years. Should I become a member of the International Freeze Dry Floral association? Most IFDFA members will agree that the best reason to join is for the networking within the industry. It is wonderful getting to know other freeze-dry specialists and sharing stories, problems, tips, and ideas. No matter how long you have been in this industry, you will always learn something from another successful business. How much does it cost to join the IFDFA?It is $335.00 U.S. for new members. Renewing allied trades, vendors, interested parties, educators and researchers $150.00 US Is there a convention or conference I can attend to learn more about freeze-drying?The IFDFA holds an annual conference, usually in the early spring. The location changes every year to allow for a variety of cities and for the convenience of our members. How can I learn more about freeze-drying?When you join IFDFA, you will receive a quarterly newsletter, be able to participate in the members-only IFDFA online message board, and attend the annual conference at a reduced rate. The IFDFA also has available a freeze-dry manual based on the first six years of floral freeze-drying. |
